Gilgamesh is the main character from the Epic of Gilgamesh, an old Akkadian poem that is considered to be the oldest great work of literature in human history.
He is also considered as a historical figure by many scholars. Many inscriptions have been found which could confirm his existence and also other figures that are mentioned inside this epic. Many think that he was probably a king.
This literature was discovered in the 18th century in old Babylonian, but only a few tables had survived.
